Mothers-to-be can change their plans

Shropshire mothers-to-be could find they can travel abroad later in their pregnancy than they thought.

Dave Williams, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said several insurers had recently reconsidered their rules.

"Previously insurers would only cover female travellers up until the 28th week of their pregnancy, and it was a rule to which tour operators strictly adhered.

"And if you were expected to give birth before, during or within eight weeks of the end of your trip, you were not covered by your insurance at all.

"But this year, it seems several big name companies have changed their opinions, which is quite a surprise.

"In fact, some companies have removed the 28-week clause from their policies altogether, saying it discriminated against pregnant women.

"These companies say any mother-to-be would need to have full permission from her doctor and the airline or tour operator if they wanted to travel after 28 weeks.

"But if they are all happy for her to travel on both the outward and return trips after the previous cut-off point, she will be covered by insurance.

"So any pregnant holidaymakers planning a break in the run-up to this year's main holiday season should double check with their own insurer, to see what their approach is.

"It's good news though for prospective parents who may be able to snatch a much-needed last-minute trip before the arrival of their baby and the life changes it will bring."
