Holiday checklist is key
Shropshire holidaymakers planning a summer escape should make sure they read the small print on their insurance policy before they leave home.
Dave Williams, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said: "With all the difficulties travellers have already faced this year, from volcanic ash to cabin crew strikes and political uprisings, there's a clear lesson that it's vital to be prepared.
"The main holiday season is fast approaching, and travellers should make sure their insurance cover is as wide ranging as possible so they don't get caught out."
He said there was no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" insurance policy and insurance companies varied greatly on the amount they would pay out.
"Everyone is different so make sure you ask questions to ensure your family's specific needs are covered.
"It's pretty obvious that cheaper policies will offer less cover, but shop around - an experienced insurance broker will find the best policy at the best price that best suits your requirements.
"Beware too that many insurance policies have an upper limit on the amount they will pay out under some sections, with some as low as and others as high as 0."
Dave said a good policy would cover medical and legal bills, personal liability, lost or stolen luggage, cancellation, protection if a firm goes bust, and a 24-hour emergency helpline.
"Remember though that you must declare all medical conditions for anyone travelling on the insurance, as this could seriously affect your cover at a later date. And if you're planning an activity holiday, check that the policy covers the actual activities you're hoping to take part in as there are exceptions.
"But most of all, take out the insurance as soon as you book your holiday. If you wait to take out the policy until just before you go, you won't be covered for cancellation which could prove extremely costly."
