Don't take the risk
Newly-qualified Shropshire drivers must make sure they are insured properly before they take to the roads.
Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers, in Newport and Shrewsbury, said the start of a new academic year meant a whole new generation of learner drivers behind the wheel.
"It's always a busy time of year for driving schools as students get their first chance to take official lessons.
"And for those who make the grade, the freedom to take to the roads once they pass their test is unparalleled."
But Dave warned that close to 2 million drivers in the UK were caught driving with no insurance last year, and the recession had only made things worse.
"In tough economic times, it's tempting to look at where you can cut costs, and for a new driver, insurance can be expensive, but it's vital that new motorists don't ignore the rules.
"Cutting your insurance to cut costs is illegal, and if you're caught, you could have your vehicle seized, and be given a minimum of six penalty points on your licence, as well as a £200 fine - not the best start to your driving career.
"Newly-qualified drivers should explore all the options and ask advice on how to find the most cost effective quote for their individual circumstances."
Dave said research showed there were 33.7 million UK driving licence holders, and 35 million UK registered vehicles on the UK roads.
"With figures like that, which are increasing every day, drivers must make sure they are protected as uninsured driving costs the UK up to £500 million a year.
"Don't resort to driving illegally to beat your financial pressures - there's a huge choice of insurance companies out there who are all competing for your business, so it's important to find the right quote."
