Disasters happen at Christmas too
Shropshire families preparing for Christmas must protect themselves in case the worst should happen.
Dave Williams, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said no-one wanted to contemplate that disasters might occur at such a special time of year.
"But in reality, it's a time of year when people tend to let their guard down, and relax more, so accidents can happen more easily."
Dave said with lots of decorations, candles, and roaring open fires around, house fires were a particular risk.
"We all enjoy getting into the spirit of the season, lighting candles, putting up the Christmas lights, and settling down in front of a welcoming log fire, but you must make sure you take extra care.
"It's all too easy to enjoy a few drinks and go off to bed without checking that candles and fires are out, and that the festive lights are turned off, and then the unthinkable happens."
Dave said householders should also be alert to security risks, as Christmas is an extremely popular time for opportunist break-ins.
"We all set out the presents under a tree in our living rooms, in full view of anyone walking past the house, and it's a temptation that burglars find difficult to ignore.
"Try to put the presents safely out of sight, and ensure your home contents insurance is up-to-date, so that you're covered if you become a victim of the festive thieves.
"Be vigilant and be prepared, and then hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy the Christmas holidays safely, rather than facing a festive season in ruins."
