Warning for dog owners
Shropshire dog owners who may be forced to insure their pet under new government rules must make sure they take expert advice.
Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said the proposals in England and Wales would require owners to insure against their pet attacking someone.
"The Government is calling on dog owners to make sure they have the right amount of liability insurance, but it's not as simple as that.
"Liability insurance cannot be bought separately, it will only be available as part of an all-encompassing pet insurance policy or within a standard household policy.
"Clearly the proposals have been suggested in a bid to tackle dangerous breeds, and it's not before time, as more than 100 people are admitted to hospital each week after dog attacks.
"But owners must take specialist advice to ensure the pet policy they choose, or their current household insurance policy, meets the new requirements."
Dave said a full pet insurance policy would not only cover liability up to £2 million if your dog was to attack someone else, but would bring extra benefits too.
"A suitable policy should also cover vet fees due to accidents or illness, subject to an initial excess, and the death of your pet due to an accident or illness.
"It will also cover boarding kennel costs if you are in hospital for more than three days, and holiday cancellation if your pet needs emergency surgery within 14 days before you are due to leave."
Dave said other cover would include advertising costs and a reward if your dog gets lost, and transport costs if your vet refers you to another practice or veterinary school.
"It can even cover the costs if your dog catches a burglar in your home and they try to sue you for their injuries.
"Pet insurance is a wise move for pet owners, and many conscientious owners have already chosen to take out a policy, even before the Government suggested these new proposals.
"But for anyone who hasn't previously considered pet insurance, check out the small print before you choose which policy to buy to make sure it suits your needs."
